Sports News – MLB news; Surgeon testifies he gave legal steroids to Bonds; Rays extend Wade Davis; Jermaine Dye retires

Surgeon testifies he gave legal steroids to Bonds

The Barry Bonds trial took a different turn on Thursday. Dr. Arthur Ting’s testimony appeared to put a wrinkle in the prosecution’s plans for perhaps the first time since the proceedings began.

Ting said he and Bonds ‘ business partner, Steve Hoskins, never spoke about Bonds and performance-enhancing drugs and that he never told Hoskins that Bonds’ 1999 elbow injury was caused by steroid use. That claim comes despite Hoskins saying he had as many as 50 conversations with Ting regarding Bonds’ health due to steroid use. Dr. Ting also testified that he gave Bonds legal steroids following surgery to ease swelling.

Hoskins’ sister, Kathy, testified yesterday that she saw Bonds’ trainer, Greg Anderson, inject him in the stomach with an unknown substance in Bonds’ bedroom sometime in 2001. She said that Anderson was hesitant to inject Bonds in front of her but that he said it was fine. She said she didn’t know what the substance was and that Bonds told her the shot was just “a little somethin, somethin, can’t detect it, before I go on the road.”

Starting pitcher Wade Davis is still a work in progress but now he’s a work in progress with a new paycheque. The Tampa Bay Rays extended him on a seven-year, $35.1-mllloin deal. Over 35 career major-league starts, Davis is 14-12 with a 4.01 ERA.

After sitting out the entire 2010 season, Jermaine Dye is finally calling it quits. The 37-year-old outfielder spent his last five seasons with the Chicago White Sox, winning the World Series MVP in 2005, and finishes his career as a .274 hitter with 325 homers.

NHL news: Dennis Wideman out with serious leg injury; Senators sign NCAA prospect Da Costa

Just when it seemed the Capitals were great shape for the playoffs, finally bringing a decent defense corps to the table, a key piece went down yesterday. Dennis Wideman suffered a severe leg hematoma after taking a hit from Tuomo Ruutu in a loss to Carolina this week.

A hematoma happens when a contusion causes blood to escape from an artery, vein or capillary into a muscle, causing major swelling and pressure. Wideman is out indefinitely.

The Ottawa Senators are wasting no time in their rebuilding process. They signed Stephane Da Costa, the former NCAA Division-I Rookie of the Year, to a two-year, entry-level contract yesterday. Da Costa, who hails from Paris, had 30 goals and 90 points in 67 games over two seasons with Merrimack College.

NFL news: Chad Pennington tears ACL playing basketball; Tony Gonzalez says he’ll retire if season cancelled

Is there a more brittle man on Earth than Chad Pennington? The free-agent veteran quarterback had hopes of another NFL comeback after having a fourth surgery on his throwing shoulder this offseason. He threw just two passes in 2010 before blowing out the shoulder again.

Low and behold, Pennington tore his ACL playing pickup basketball this week. He’ll require surgery. No word yet on whether he’ll continue is journey back to the NFL.

If the lockout causes the 2011 NFL season to be cancelled, Tony Gonzalez will call it a career. The future Hall-of-Fame tight end said this week that it wouldn’t be “smart” to return in 2012 after a one-year layoff at his age (he’s 35 now).

NCAA basketball news: Isaiah Thomas entering NBA draft

After leading the Washington Huskies to two straight Pac-10 titles and lifting them into the NCAA Tournament with a buzzer-beater this season, guard Isaiah Thomas feels he’s done enough in the college ranks.

Thomas will forego his senior season and enter the 2011 NBA draft. Thomas averaged 16.1 points and 6.1 assists per game this year.
